Overview

General Israel Putnam (1718–1790) was a distinguished figure in American history, known for his significant contributions during the American Revolutionary War. Folklore

Story recounted in William Livington’s biography of Putnam in which he purportively fights a duel with a British officer with a barrel of gunpowder.  In the end, the British officer blinks first and Putnam reveals that it was just a barrel of onions!
